Why Applying Oil to Your Skin is Actually Good For It

While it may seem counterintuitive to apply oils to your skin especially if you already have oily skin, it is actually the healthiest thing for it.

Our skin is naturally designed to fight against infection and the effects of the environment. This protective action comes from a combination of lactic acid, amino acids and free fatty acids. This gives our skin the slightly acidic pH, which stops our skin and body from absorbing bacteria. Any disruption to this layer allows damage to the skin resulting in blemishes, dryness and other irritations.

Everything from the foods we eat to the amount of water we consume affects our pH balance. Plant-based oils (i.e. olive oil, hazelnut oil, jojoba oil, etc.) are one thing that helps the skin maintain its natural pH balance

Many conventional soaps and cleansers tend to be more alkaline and have a stripping effect on the skin.  In response to the disruption of its pH, the body produces more sebum (oil) to make up for the loss. This often leads to that greasy feeling that many people know all too well. The only thing that seems to remedy this is washing your face. You can see where this is going.

Many skin care products are oil based. However, these oils often don’t harmonize with the skin and its natural secretions. Examples of these are mineral oil, lanoline and petroleum. These will not only clog your skin but will also stop your sebaceous glands (oil producing glands) from producing the natural oils needed to protect and maintain the health of your skin.

As we age, the amount of oil or sebum produced naturally from our skin decreases, affecting the skin’s ability to protect itself. Using moisturizers that work well with the skin’s natural oil secretions will help build this barrier. Jojoba, Hazelnut and Rosehip Seed oil, which are found in Vaalia Lélek® L’essence products, are just some natural moisturizers.

Topical antioxidants (Vitamin A, C, E, etc.) and nutrients are also important in maintaining the pH of the skin. They fortify the cells so that they can function optimally, and also protect the cells from environmental stresses and oxidation. Vaalia Lélek® L’essence products are created solely from plant essences and plant oils that contain such antioxidants and other vital nutrients.

With use of Vaalia Lélek® L’essence products if it seems that your skin actually becomes oilier than before don’t be alarmed.  In order to maintain the skin's natural pH balance, your body has been producing more sebum to make up for what has been stripped. Once you stop stripping your skin it takes a little while for your body to catch on to the fact that it no longer has to produce as much sebum to maintain its balance. It will take a few days to a week to recalibrate but hang in there because once it adjusts you'll actually have a much less oily feeling than before you began using our products.

If you find your skin is breaking out, is unusually dry or has some other issue, try adjusting your food and water intake as well as what you are using on your skin, it is usually a simple pH imbalance that is causing the changes.

Most skin problems are a result of poor diet, stress, lifestyle habits such as smoking and consuming alcohol, lack of exercise, too much sun exposure, poor skin care and not drinking enough water. Simple changes to your lifestyle can encourage good pH balance in the skin. Consuming foods such as apples, citrus fruits, blackberries and tomatoes can naturally assist in the balancing of skin pH.
